Registration and Competence

Practice
Advisory
(Term: 3 yrs, maximum 6 years) | Participate in the development and review of key documents affecting the practice of audiology and speech-language pathology. | Project-based, typically 1-hour lunchtime meetings. Frequency depends on project deadlines, rarely no more than one meeting per month. | Orientation meeting and ongoing guidance from experienced members; collaborative document review and development. | Travel expenses covered | Relevant practice experience or familiarity with professional standards. |
Complaints
(Term: 3 yrs) | To receive and review complaints, conduct preliminary investigations, request and obtain such information, documents, evidence and things as they consider necessary for the purpose of the committee, and to either dismiss a complaint refer the complaint to the Discipline Committee for further investigation. | Varies depending on complaint complexity (2-20 hours). Typically, 4-5 hours per complaint. | Instructions and support from legal counsel throughout the complaint review process. | Travel expenses covered | Minimum of 5 years of field experience. Requires two reference letters to confirm reputation for fairness, just conduct, and confidentiality. |
Discipline Committee
(Term: 2 years) | To determine the guilt or innocence of a member against whom a complaint was received by holding a hearing as outlined in the Act Respecting Health Professionals. | As needed. Typically involves a full-day orientation with a lawyer prior to a hearing, reviewing documents/evidence, meeting with the committee to deliberate, and participating in hearings (1-2 days). | Full-day orientation with a lawyer; upcoming Procedures Manual for ongoing guidance during disciplinary hearings. | Travel, lodging, and meals covered.
